Trustpilot Shopify app: how to connect your store, and the rules that apply

Trustpilot has its own Shopify app. It sends a review invitation after each order and lets you drag widgets into your theme. The free plan works, with limits on invitations and widgets. This page covers the install steps, what each plan gets, and the two sets of rules that still apply: Trustpilot's invitation rules and the FTC's rule on hiding reviews.

Short answer

Trustpilot Shopify setup runs through Trustpilot's own app in the Shopify App Store. It sends review invitations after orders and adds Trustpilot widgets through your theme editor. The app is free to install. The free plan gets 50 invitations a month and one widget. Your invitations still have to follow Trustpilot's fairness rules.

Key facts

What does the Trustpilot Shopify app do?

If you want Trustpilot on Shopify, Trustpilot's own app is the direct route. Its help page says the app lets you "automate your review invitations and showcase your Trustpilot widgets directly on your storefront."

That breaks down into two jobs.

  • Invitations. After an order, the app emails the customer and asks for a review on Trustpilot. You set the timing and the email template.
  • Widgets. You drag Trustpilot widgets into your theme from the Shopify theme editor. No code is needed.

Trustpilot's integration page adds a third job. You can manage reviews and reply to them from one place.

The App Store listing was launched in February 2026, and Trustpilot is the developer. It works with Shopify Admin and tools such as Klaviyo and Zendesk.

Which Trustpilot plan does each feature need?

The app is free to install. What you get depends on your Trustpilot plan. These figures come from the Shopify listing.

PlanPrice on the listingInvitations a monthWidgets
FreeFree501
Starter$1,188 a year1002
Plus$3,828 a year30010
Premium$9,588 a year1,00021

A few notes sit under that table.

  • The listing says Starter is for small businesses with up to $5M in revenue, and is open to new customers only.
  • On Plus, the listing says extra domains are priced separately.
  • Trustpilot's own pricing page lists an Enterprise plan with unlimited invitations and a price on request. It also says all contracts are a 12-month commitment.

Product reviews are a separate thread. Trustpilot's page on managing product reviews says that inbox is included on every plan, from Free to Enterprise. The help page for the new app does not spell out product review settings. The older app's guide did cover them, with a toggle and product sync by SKU, MPN or GTIN.

How do you install Trustpilot on Shopify?

Trustpilot's setup guide has three steps. This is for stores installing the app for the first time.

Step 1: install the app.

  1. Open Trustpilot on the Shopify App Store, or search for "Trustpilot" there.
  2. Click Install to open the app.
  3. Select Log in. If you have no Trustpilot account yet, select Create account.
  4. Once you are logged in, Trustpilot sends you back to Shopify.
  5. Continue the onboarding flow.

Step 2: confirm your invitation settings. During onboarding you choose settings such as email timing and templates. You can change them later in the app's Settings.

Step 3: add widgets.

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes.
  2. Next to your live theme, select Edit theme.
  3. Click Add section and open the Apps tab.
  4. Pick the Trustpilot widget you want.
  5. Drag it into place, then click Save.

Once that is done, the store starts inviting customers and the widgets go live.

What if you still run the old app?

The older app is called Trustpilot Reviews. Its help page says it "will soon be retired." It was installed from inside Trustpilot Business, not from the App Store.

Trustpilot's upgrade post says the new app is a full rebuild. To move across, you connect your account again, set up your invitations again and re-add your widgets. Old widget settings do not carry over.

The legacy guide also shows how invitation timing worked. You could trigger the email on "Order confirmed", after payment, or "Order completed", when the order is fulfilled. You could also add a delay. That same page says service reviews are always on when Shopify is connected.

Which rules apply to invitations sent from Shopify?

The app automates the sending. It does not change the rules. Two sets apply.

Trustpilot's rules. Its invitation best practices ask you to invite everyone the same way, at the same point in the customer journey, whatever their experience. If you cannot invite everyone, use an impartial method, such as every third customer. Trustpilot's Guidelines for Businesses also ban incentives for writing a review, such as discounts or promo codes.

An automatic invitation after every order is fair by design. The trouble starts when a store adds filters on top. Common examples:

  • excluding customers who opened a support ticket
  • excluding orders that were refunded
  • sending only to repeat buyers, who are already happy
  • pausing invitations during a bad shipping month

Each of these picks who gets asked. Our guide to Trustpilot's invitation rules covers the full list.

Timing matters too. Trustpilot's Action We Take policy says inviting only at an early stage can produce unbalanced reviews. For a supplement or a treatment plan, results take weeks. Set the delay to match.

The FTC's rule. Section 465.7(b) of 16 CFR Part 465 covers the reviews a business shows on its own site. It applies when they are presented as most or all reviews while some are hidden by rating or sentiment. A Trustpilot widget on your product page, filtered to 4 and 5 stars, has that shape. Leave the filter off.

Screening customers before you invite them is called review gating. Our review gating guide explains where the platform rules end and the FTC rule starts. This page is general information, not legal advice.

What should health brands check first?

The app needs access to your store data. The Shopify listing says it can view customers, products and orders.

For a supplement brand, that is normal ecommerce data. For a telehealth storefront, an order can reveal a condition. Trustpilot publishes a HIPAA Business Associate Addendum for covered entities that share protected health information through its invitation services. Ask your privacy counsel whether it applies to you before you connect the store.

Two more habits help.

  • Keep the invitation template generic. No product names or conditions in the subject line.
  • Turn off product review invitations if a product name would reveal a diagnosis.

Does the app fix a low TrustScore?

Not on its own. The app brings in more reviews, and Trustpilot's TrustScore gives recent reviews more weight. So a steady flow of fair invitations tends to move a score over time.

It does nothing about the 1-star reviews already there. Some of those may break Trustpilot's published rules, and some will not. Our free Trustpilot audit reads your profile and tells you which ones could qualify for flagging. Trustpilot makes each decision.

Set up the app, invite every customer the same way, and leave your widgets unfiltered.

We do this work for clients through our Trustpilot review removal service, and the price per removed review is published.
