Auto-ship and refund complaints on Trustpilot: a guide for supplement brands

A customer orders one bottle, gets billed for three months and cannot find a way to cancel. The review writes itself. For supplement brands this is the most common 1-star review, and it is a genuine experience under Trustpilot's rules. This guide covers what you can do about it. We remove the reviews around it that do break a rule, such as promo codes and wrong-company reviews. You pay per removal.

Short answer

Auto-ship, renewal and refund complaints are genuine experiences, and Trustpilot keeps them online. Do not offer a refund in exchange for deleting a review. Trustpilot bans it, and the FTC treated the same conduct as review suppression. A contract term that forbids reviews is void under federal law. These reviews can be flagged only when they break a rule for another reason, such as carrying a rival's promo code. The fix is a checkout that states the subscription plainly, easy cancellation, a reminder before renewal and fair invitations to every customer.

Key facts

What these reviews say

We noted the themes of recent negative reviews on several supplement profiles in our September 2026 sample. The same words came up on each:

  • subscription enrolment the customer did not expect
  • cancellation that was hard to find or did not work
  • support that was automated or could not be reached
  • refunds that were slow or refused, and restocking fees
  • missing or damaged parcels
  • charges the customer did not recognize

Four of those six are about the subscription, not about the product.

Why Trustpilot keeps them

Trustpilot removes reviews for five reasons. A billing dispute is not one of them. The customer ordered, was charged and wrote about it. That is a genuine experience, even when your records tell a different story.

A flag on one of these reviews comes back as an invalid case. Your share of invalid cases is public on your Company activity page for 12 months, along with the star ratings of the reviews you flagged.

The refund-for-deletion trap

"Refund me and I will take the review down." Many support teams say yes. Three rules say no.

Trustpilot. Its Guidelines for Businesses ban incentives for writing or editing reviews, and the examples include discounts, promo codes, refunds and freebies. Its Action We Take policy treats offers tied to edits or removal as misuse, which can end in a Consumer Warning.

The FTC. In its NextMed case the agency said the company suppressed negative Trustpilot reviews by "conditioning refunds on consumers' agreement to remove negative reviews".

The Consumer Review Fairness Act. A term in your return policy that bars or fines a review is void, and offering it is unlawful.

The safe order is this. Decide the refund on its merits. Pay it if it is owed. Do not mention the review. Train support to say nothing about reviews at all.

Replying

Supplement brands are rarely covered by HIPAA. Two other limits apply. Do not post a customer's order details in public. And do not make health claims, because the FTC's Health Products Compliance Guidance counts statements on the internet and in social media as advertising.

Do not writeWrite
"You ticked the subscription box on March 3.""Our subscription terms are shown at checkout, and cancelling should be simple. Please contact our support team so we can sort this out."
"We refunded you, so please update your review.""We are sorry for the trouble. Our team is glad to help with anything else."
"You need to take it for 90 days before judging it.""Everyone responds differently. Our support team can explain our return policy."

The checkout fixes that reduce these reviews

  1. Make one-time purchase the default, or make the choice between one-time and subscription impossible to miss.
  2. State the renewal price and date next to the buy button, not in the terms.
  3. Send a reminder before every renewal, with a one-click skip and a one-click cancel.
  4. Put cancellation in the account area. No phone call, no chat queue.
  5. Confirm every cancellation by email at once.
  6. Drop the restocking fee, or state it before purchase. It appears in reviews far more often than it earns.
  7. Give support a refund limit they can approve alone.

This is general information. Subscription billing is regulated, and your counsel should review your flow.

Then invite everyone

In our sample, 7 of 18 supplement profiles carried Trustpilot's notice that the company had not invited customers recently. Four of those seven had 1-star shares above 50%. Those profiles are written almost entirely by customers who went looking for a place to complain.

Every TrustScore includes 7 neutral 3.5-star reviews, so a small profile is easy to pull down and easy to lift. Fair invitations to every customer, sent automatically after delivery, change who is heard. Our guide to invitation rules covers the wording.

Where removal fits

Removal clears the reviews that should not be on the profile: the promo codes, the wrong-brand reviews and the copied text. It does not touch a real billing complaint. The supplements page has a sample audit, and the main Trustpilot review removal page explains the five reasons.

This is the work behind our Trustpilot review removal service. You pay per removal, and the three packs and their prices are public.

Frequently asked questions

No. The customer is describing how your checkout felt to them, and a dispute about consent does not make the review fake. If many reviews say the same thing, the checkout is the problem to fix.

Refund them if they are owed it, and do not connect it to the review. Trustpilot bans incentives for editing or deleting reviews and lists refunds as an example. The FTC described the same trade in its NextMed case. Source: Guidelines for Businesses.

No. A term like that is void under the Consumer Review Fairness Act, and offering it is unlawful. See our guide to the Act.

Only those that break a rule for another reason. A review that carries a rival's discount code, names a support agent with contact details, or is clearly about another brand can be flagged for that.

They cannot be removed, so no. On a small profile the fastest lawful change is to invite every customer. Satisfied customers rarely review unless asked, and recent reviews weigh more. Source: TrustScore explained.
